Valentine's Day at Chez Shafer

We were so excited for Valentine's Day to get here that we opened our gifts to each other early.  The gifting went as follows:
  • Noah got Katie: A New Blu-Ray player so that I can watch Netflix on the treadmill.  I'm loving it! It certainly makes those miles seem shorter.
  • Katie got Noah: (beware, this is very, very romantic and not for those who are sensitive to mooshy-ness) A Costco-sized pack of blade replacements for his razor, 3 large bath towels, and a white-noise-making alarm clock.  You should know that I made his wildest dreams come true with that gift.
  • Mom & Dad got Calvin: A box to lock his stuff in, Wyatt: A Transformers bathrobe, Cyrus: I can't remember. Oh, and they all got new socks.
  • Calvin, Wyatt, and Cyrus got Mom & Dad: Nothing.  Unless you count the joy they bring us everyday.
And on to the pictures because, let's be honest, that is why you are here reading this blog.

So, while were we making heart-shaped sugar cookies to be decorated, Calvin got upset at Noah and I for something.  I wish I could remember what it is because I know it would make the story better.  Anyhoo, he did not want us to look at him, but he still wanted to be around the cookie making, so he taped a piece of paper to his face.  If you don't think this is funny, there is no hope.  Stop reading and eat a sandwich.

After the baking comes the decorating, and from this picture of Cyrus' skills, I'm pretty sure if he opens a bakery when he grows up, his cookies will be popular with the 5 and under age group.  Each cookie had it's own bottle of sprinkles and at least 5 sugar heart things.
And now he is on to enjoying his handiwork.
Calvin was a bit more deliberate with his design. Aren't they lovely?
Wyatt proved that he taught Cyrus all he knew about cookie decorating when he dumped the bottle of sprinkles on his own cookie.
And I forgot to mention:  shirts were optional at this event.
The week after Valentine's Day is a particularly special time for me because it is the start of Easter Candy Season (my favorite candy time).  We wasted no time getting Peeps & Reese's peanut butter eggs.  I had Noah hide the bag of PB eggs from me because they wouldn't last a day around my sweet tooth.  As you can see, he did a bang up job.  Look in the right hand corner of that ceiling cut out, and you will spy the little bag of candy.  It's much too high for me to get.  Trust me.  I know only because I risked my life to trying to reach them.
And finally, have a lookie at Cyrus' picture he painted in nursery.  As his nursery leader said, "he just painted that little girl's face right off."  It gave us a good laugh.

Uh Little Uh This, and Uh Little Uh That

Things have been going on as usual around here.  We've snapped a couple of pictures around here for you to enjoy.  Wyatt goes to preschool four days a week.  His favorite teacher is Ms. Lisa, and they always do such fun things there.  One day they made gingerbread houses that they decorated themselves.  I was so pleased when Wyatt showed me his because it had a ton of frosting, and he also just laid licorice on the top as the roof so it would be super easy to eat.  He was kind enough to share with Cyrus and I.  When I told him his house looked awesome, he said, "I know it is because I'm a rock star."  I don't even need to add witty commentary to that story.

Speaking of Mr. Wyatt, he wasn't feeling very well a couple of weeks ago.  I had to run to the store to grab a couple of things, and while we were shopping he fell asleep in the cart.  Plus Cy is cute.
Calvin and Wyatt are taking karate.  They like it a lot.  I wish I could figure out how to upload the video.  Wyatt has his own version of every move.
The White Ninja.  (Calvin is actually in real life the Black Ninja.  His first week he wore the white outfit, and then I washed it.  And like all talented moms I shrunk it so much that it had to be handed down to Wyatt.  We had to buy a new black outfit, so now Calvin wears the black outfit and is appropriately named the Black Ninja.)  So end of long story = Wyatt is the White Ninja, but not in this picture.  And Cal is showing you a block.  It really works.  I tried to attack him the other day in the kitchen, and he blocked all my moves.  I am the Pink Ninja except I don't have a pink outfit.  I just call myself that to add some estrogen to this place.

A few weeks, I had a girl's night out at my place for my sweet friend, Jen.  She was having her baby and in place of a shower we decided to have party.  I must admit, I think it was a lot of fun.  We ended up at my house for chit chat and Bingo, so Noah kept the boys in our bedroom with pizza and movies.  The party went on until 2 a.m. (yeah, I've still got it), and so the boys fell asleep in our bed.  Noah snapped this adorable picture of them.  Don't they look completely angelic?  Actually Cy is fake sleeping and just about to suffocate Wyatt, and Wyatt is trying to get Calvin into a headlock. Kidding!  Sheesh, you fell for that one.

Updates:

Noah - You will most likely find him doing one of the following:  toiling away at the budget on our computer (one of his favorite hobbies), wrestling with The Banditos, going to work, coming home from work, or teasing (which he calls flirting with) me.  He loves to crunch numbers and watch savings grow.  I, on the other hand, love to find new and exciting ways to spend money.  We are a match made in Heaven I tell ya.  He is the yin to my yang, the frugal to my spend.  This past week he has been trying to avoid food with sugar and salt.  I tried to hang with the plan, but had to bail last night and eat a Bit O'Honey and some peeps. He is doing a much better job than I am.

Katie - It's always hard to update you on what I am doing because it isn't that exciting.  Oh wait, I have a couple of exciting things to report:  I finally got the hard water deposits on the shower door scrubbed off, I mastered the frosted sugar cookie this week, I discovered that the trick to make my hair stay curly is using 1/3 can of mousse and a handful of gel, and I loathe my vacuum cleaner and long for a Dyson.  So, there you have it - - a meticulous accounting of domestic bliss.  I should also mention that I love our babysitting co-op because I have been able to volunteer in Cal's class.

Calvin - He saved all of his Christmas money and his allowance money for months and bought Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS.  We were quite proud of all of his saving, and he has been savoring the game (and Noah, too, thanks Cal!) I just had a parent/teacher conference this past week, and Calvin is excelling in all areas of his schooling.  We feel proud of him because he is a diligent student.  As hard as he works, I would still be proud because that is what matters to me - that he gives it 100%.  Calvin's sense of humor is getting more and more keen, especially as it relates to his Dad.  They share many an inside joke with Calvin giving big belly laughs.  Calvin's fingernails and toenails grow at a crazy fast rate.  Today as we were sitting on my bed, I looked down and was shocked to see his toenails.  They looked like they belonged on a homeless man.  I immediately hacked them down, but not before I called Guinness Book of World Records.  They already had a record there and referred me to Ripley's Belief it or Not.  I'll call Monday morning when they are back in the office.

Wyatt - There is a chance that he might be too big for his britches.  He has appointed himself "Captain" of the other kids at preschool and decides each day what everyone else will like and/or.  In the car the other day, I heard him to tell his friend, Britain, that they did not like cats they only liked dogs.  Britain said okay and went along with it.  Also, my friend told me today at church that she asked her son (who is in Wyatt's preschool class) if Wyatt is the boss.  He said, "He thinks that he is the third teacher."  There are two adult teachers, which would make him the third.  So, I have to wonder, shouldn't he be getting paid for all of his hard, bossy work?  I am looking forward to seeing him blossom in his upper management career.  Aside from being in charge, he is also learning to read with me and being a good brother to Calvin and Cy.  Plus, he is off-the-hook funny.  He told me last night that he wanted to be the only one to sit beside me at church today.  He said, "You sit beside the log (meaning the arm rest of the pew), and I'll sit beside you so no one else can."  I can't resist that kind of charm.

Cyrus - Or should I say "Baby-dini."  He can get out of his jammies so easily, even when we safety pin the zipper down.  My most favorite discoveries are when he sheds not only his pjs but also his diaper - - a mother's dream!!!!!  One night we heard him crying on the baby monitor in the middle of the night, which is unusual, so I went to check.  He was naked as a jay bird and curled in a ball.  He woke up when he peed on himself.  Again, one of those joyous moments in my career.  I love it all - - the midnight laundry, the midnight bath, the midnight consoling (i actually do love that part).  It is second only to a midnight barf.  Aside from the undressing is still the constant dressing.  He knows exactly what he wants to wear, and it always involves a hat and coat.  His hat is a 6 month-old baby Boston Red Sox hat.  So, he perpetually looks like he is wearing a baseball hat yarmulke.  Did I mention that he repeats almost everything we say, but it a much more adorable voice.  He's as sweet as honey.

We Didn't See Julia Roberts, But . . . . . .

we sure had a great time in Taos!  (Julia lives there.  I know this only because I spend waaaayyyyyyy too much time on people.com.)

So, a few weeks ago, Noah called me from work and said, "We should go out of town next weekend because we never go anywhere."  And that was all he needed to say.  So, we decided on Taos because we thought it might be fun to see what the ski slopes up there had to offer (read: we would like to tube down the bunny slope because we are too cheap to go skiing and too untalented to ski).

And we did.  We took the 2 1/2 hour trip up there and had a great time.  Our first stop was a burger place.  And it was good.  And we were all happy.
Cyrus and I were ready to say cheese.  Calvin was fake dying (I think).
We made our way over to this cool little toy store with great over priced toys and a free play area.  The kids had a great time, and Noah and I enjoyed watching them play.  It was especially cute to see Cy try and climb in the jungle gym because he's got those short legs, you know.  I wore my black rubber boots because it was a ski town, and I was just sure I would be trudging through lots of snow.  Turns out the snow was just on the mountain, and I wore those stiff boots all day for no good reason.  Kelly Orton, you may not be surprised that I chose the wrong piece of clothing for the weather.  I, however, was shocked!
Cute Cal is either in a weird hand chair or actually sitting in a giant's hand that is reaching through the floor.  You be the judge.
Cyrus the Guyrus.
More of Cutie.

Please don't tell Wyatt that he is the girl.  He would be ticked.  We just told them to stick their heads through the holes and failed to mention that they were being typecast.
Surely you didn't think that we would pass the candy store in the town square without stopping in.  The kids chose giant marshmallows dipped in white chocolate and rolled in sprinkles.  Sounds awesome, no?  Yeah, that's why I was surprised to find a barely eaten marshmallow in the cup holder the following week.  And no, it didn't stop me from eating it.  What?!  My standards are very low when it comes to sugar.  Very, very low.
This is where you would see pics of us tubing at Taos Ski Valley, but you can tell that we were focused more on having a great time and not on taking pics.  But trust me, it was so fun!

As we left, we drove to the Taos Gorge Bridge.  Note: it was in the Academy Award winning film, "Wild Hogs."  The pictures don't do it justice.  I know that it looks like Noah and Cy and Cal are just standing in front of some busted up chain-link fence, but the fence is actually keeping you from falling down . . . . . .
. . . . . . there. . . . . and . . . . .
. . . . . (if you live). . . washing down this river.  It was a pretty sight, and we loved stopping.  You should give it a try.
While we were staying there, Wyatt experienced the "Taos Hum."  Look it up on wikipedia; it is kind of interesting.  As we were lying in the motel room about to go to sleep, Wyatt complained about a humming noise that was keeping him awake/scaring him.  At the same time, Noah was reading about Taos on his phone and read about a humming noise that only some people can hear when they are there.  No one has been able to figure out what it is from and why only some people can hear it.  It was even discussed in an episode of X-Files.  I have to say that it made me feel like we got the full Taos experience.  So, thanks to you, Wyatt, for listening to the annoying humming.  You really took one for the team.
